The “Happy Gilmore Ligament”: Fact, Fiction & Fixing Your Golf Swing

If you caught Happy Gilmore 2, you probably laughed at the wild line about someone getting surgery to remove a ligament to improve their golf swing. While it makes for a great on-screen gag, here in the clinic it got me thinking: there actually is a ligament that affects your swing—one you definitely don’t want removed.

I call it the “Happy Gilmore Ligament” (not its official name, of course). In reality, it’s your iliolumbar ligament, and it’s absolutely essential to a powerful, pain-free golf swing.

The Real Ligament Behind the Swing: The Iliolumbar

The iliolumbar ligament connects your L5 vertebra (the bottom of your lumbar spine) to your pelvis (iliac crest). It’s a short, strong band of tissue that helps stabilize your lower spine—especially during rotation, lateral bending, and explosive motion, like a full golf swing.

When healthy, it’s your friend. But when it becomes tight, inflamed, or restricted, it can easily become the source of low back pain, reduced hip mobility, or that frustrating “stuck” feeling during your backswing.

Common Symptoms of Iliolumbar Dysfunction

If your iliolumbar ligament is under stress, you might notice:

  • A deep, dull ache at the top of the glutes or lower back
  • Tenderness when pressing just above your iliac crest
  • Pain with twisting, bending, or prolonged sitting
  • Stiffness when setting up or following through on your swing
  • Reduced spinal rotation or hip mobility

It’s often misdiagnosed as a disc issue, SI joint pain, or even a muscular strain—until you dig a little deeper.

How to Keep Your “Happy Gilmore Ligament” Happy

🧘‍♂️ Mobility & Stretching Techniques

  • Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch with Side Bend
Opens up the iliacus and lumbar fascia for better lateral mobility.
  • Thread the Needle
Great for thoracic and deep spinal rotation—relieves lumbar compensation.
  • Supine Windshield Wipers
Promotes gentle rotation and re-coordination of the lumbar spine.
  • Pelvic Tilts
Easy and effective for reconnecting spinal motion and core control.

🔧 Chiropractic Adjustments: Reset the Foundation

Here’s the secret sauce: chiropractic adjustments to the lower lumbar spine and pelvis can dramatically reduce tension on the iliolumbar ligament.

When the joints in your L4-L5 vertebrae or sacroiliac (SI) joints are misaligned or not moving properly, they increase mechanical stress on the surrounding ligaments—including the iliolumbar. Over time, this leads to irritation, inflammation, and decreased mobility.

Gentle, precise adjustments restore alignment and joint movement, allowing the ligament to relax and unload. The result?

  • Improved spinal rotation
  • Less low back pain
  • Better hip-pelvis control
  • A more efficient and powerful swing

I often describe it to patients as “giving the ligament room to breathe.”

🛠️ Graston Technique®: Deep Soft Tissue Relief

The iliolumbar ligament is deeply embedded and surrounded by tough fascia. This makes it difficult to fully release with stretching alone. That’s where Graston Technique® comes in.

This specialized form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization helps to:

  • Break up adhesions and tight fascia
  • Improve blood flow to restricted areas
  • Reduce inflammation and restore pliability

At Beachside Chiropractic & Wellness, it’s a go-to method for golfers with chronic lower back or pelvic tightness. Most feel a noticeable difference in just a few sessions—especially when combined with adjustments and rehab.

🏌️ Golf-Specific Drills to Reinforce Your Gains

  • Banded Hip Rotations
Promotes clean separation of hip and spine—key for torque and control.
  • Wall Rotations
Great for training rotational mechanics without compensating through the low back.
  • Cat-Cow with Lumbar Twist
Builds awareness and segmental mobility through the lumbar spine.
